Purse theft in Stone Town Centre

Yesterday we have received several reports of purses being taken from bags while the owners were shopping in Stone Town centre. we are currently investigating these incidents but wanted to give some advice about

Crime Prevention Advice: Don't Let a Pickpocket Spoil Your Day

Pickpockets often use distraction techniques and victims may not realise they have been targeted until later. Common tactics include:

Bumping into you while an accomplice steals from your pocket or handbag.

Asking for the time or directions to distract your attention.

Creating crowding or confusion in busy areas.

To reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

Remain aware of your surroundings.

Avoid carrying your wallet, purse, or mobile phone in a back pocket.

Do not keep valuables in easily accessible backpacks.

Keep handbags fastened and close to your body with the opening facing inwards.

Keep a hand on your bag when in busy areas.

Do not leave bags attached to wheelchairs, mobility scooters, prams, or pushchairs.
